Sunsational Summer Reads...

Throw one of these books into your beach bag and you are in for a
great summer read!

One of only two survivors of a plane crash, Nell Slattery wakes in the hospital with no memory of the horrific experience-or who she is, or was. Now she must piece together both body and mind, with the help of family and friends, who have their own agendas. She filters through photos, art, music, and stories, hoping something will jog her memory, and soon, in tiny bits and pieces, Nell starts remembering. . . .

It isn't long before she learns to question the stories presented by her mother, her sister and business partner, and her husband. In the end, she will discover that forgiving betrayals small and large will be the only true path to healing herself-and to finding happiness.

The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying.

The story also begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot—searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

What unfolds is a dazzling, yet deeply human, roller coaster of a novel, spanning fifty years and nearly as many lives. From the lavish set of Cleopatra to the shabby revelry of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Walter introduces us to the tangled lives of a dozen unforgettable characters: the starstruck Italian innkeeper and his long-lost love; the heroically preserved producer who once brought them together and his idealistic young assistant; the army veteran turned fledgling novelist and the rakish Richard Burton himself, whose appetites set the whole story in motion—along with the husbands and wives, lovers and dreamers, superstars and losers, who populate their world in the decades that follow. Gloriously inventive, constantly surprising, Beautiful Ruins is a story of flawed yet fascinating people, navigating the rocky shores of their lives while clinging to their improbable dreams.

Maybe it was those extra five pounds I’d gained. Maybe it was because I was about to turn the same age my mother was when I lost her. Maybe it was because after almost twenty years of marriage my husband and I seemed to be running out of things to say to each other.

But when the anonymous online study called “Marriage in the 21st Century” showed up in my inbox, I had no idea how profoundly it would change my life. It wasn’t long before I was assigned both a pseudonym (Wife 22) and a caseworker (Researcher 101).

And, just like that, I found myself answering questions.

7. Sometimes I tell him he’s snoring when he’s not snoring so he’ll sleep in the guest room and I can have the bed all to myself.

 61. Chet Baker on the tape player. He was cutting peppers for the salad. I looked at those hands and thought, I am going to have this man’s children.

 67. To not want what you don’t have. What you can’t have. What you shouldn’t have.

 32. That if we weren’t careful, it was possible to forget one another.

Before the study, my life was an endless blur of school lunches and doctor’s appointments, family dinners, budgets, and trying to discern the fastest-moving line at the grocery store. I was Alice Buckle: spouse of William and mother to Zoe and Peter, drama teacher and Facebook chatter, downloader of memories and Googler of solutions.

But these days, I’m also Wife 22. And somehow, my anonymous correspondence with Researcher 101 has taken an unexpectedly personal turn. Soon, I’ll have to make a decision—one that will affect my family, my marriage, my whole life. But at the moment, I’m too busy answering questions.

As it turns out, confession can be a very powerful aphrodisiac.

Family secrets may shape us all, but it’s the rich, complicated layers of friendship that can save us.
Cate, Renee, and Abby have come to New York for very different reasons, and in a bustling city of millions, they are linked together through circumstance and chance.

Cate has just been named the features editor of Gloss, a high-end lifestyle magazine. It’s a professional coup, but her new job comes with more complications than Cate ever anticipated.
Her roommate Renee will do anything to nab the plum job of beauty editor at Gloss. But snide comments about Renee’s weight send her into an emotional tailspin. Soon she is taking black market diet pills—despite the racing heartbeat and trembling hands that signal she’s heading for real danger.
Then there’s Abby, whom they take in as a third roommate. Once a joyful graduate student working as a nanny part time, she abruptly fled a seemingly happy life in the D.C. suburbs. No one knows what shattered Abby—or why she left everything she once loved behind.

This compelling novel tells the story of three very different women as they navigate the complications of careers and love—and find the lifeline they need in each other.

Los Angeles–based travel writer Annie Adams thinks she has it all. Nick, her longtime film director boyfriend, has finally hit the big time, her column is syndicated, and they've got a great dog. Things are perfect. That is, until Nick unexpectedly moves out. Three months later, Annie is married to Griffin, a down-to-earth chef with a restaurant in the Berkshires. When Nick asks for a second chance, Annie is torn between her husband and the man she might have been meant to marry.

Emily Giffin delivers an unforgettable story of two women, the families that make them who they are, and the longing, loyalty and love that binds them together.
Marian Caldwell is a thirty-six year old television producer, living her dream in New York City. With a fulfilling career and satisfying relationship, she has convinced everyone, including herself, that her life is just as she wants it to be. But one night, Marian answers a knock on the door . . . only to find Kirby Rose, an eighteen-year-old girl with a key to a past that Marian thought she had sealed off forever. From the moment Kirby appears on her doorstep, Marian’s perfectly constructed world—and her very identity—will be shaken to its core, resurrecting ghosts and memories of a passionate young love affair that threaten everything that has come to define her.
For the precocious and determined Kirby, the encounter will spur a process of discovery that ushers her across the threshold of adulthood, forcing her to re-evaluate her family and future in a wise and bittersweet light. As the two women embark on a journey to find the one thing missing in their lives, each will come to recognize that where we belong is often where we least expect to find ourselves—a place that we may have willed ourselves to forget, but that the heart remembers forever.

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?
As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn’t do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?

For The Graduate

At this time of year I often get asked for book recommendations for graduation gifts.  Believe it or not, a picture book never goes wrong.  If you know me at all, then you know that I love children's picture books. Often times there is so much more beyond the simple words and delightful pictures. There is often an underlying message to be had or a life lesson to learn.

With the graduate in mind, here are a few of my favourite picks ...

Curious George Curious You: On Your Way!

Curious You: On Your Way! is a perfect sendoff for children of all ages entering a new phase of their lives. Scenes from many original Curious George books accompany words of congratulations and encouragement to anyone who has accomplished much but still has many things to see, to do, and to dream. Curious You: On Your Way! helps to celebrate all of the milestones of our lives.

Courage

There are many kinds of courage.   Often times what defines it, defines us. There are heroic kinds of courage, but there are also everyday kinds of courage that normal, ordinary people exhibit all the time, like "being the first to make up after an argument," or "going to bed without a nightlight." Bernard Waber explores the many varied kinds of courage and celebrates the moments, big and small, that bring out the hero in each of us.

Yay, You!: Moving Out, Moving Up, Moving On

This book is great for graduates, or for anyone facing imminent change. This book offers  profound insight with bold inspiration, and sound advice. And in true Sandra Boynton fashion, there is also an occasional hippo. Graduates will thank you as this book will not overstress the weary mind. It's nice and short, with lots of pictures, no chapters, no index, no graphs, no study questions, and not a single suggestion for further reading!

"There are so many choices. The world is immense. Take a good look around and decide what makes sense..."

The North Star

It is often said that life is a journey, and we all know that is true. But sometimes it’s hard to know which path to follow when signs point in so many directions. In this beautifully illustrated book, Peter H. Reynolds encourages readers to observe, to wonder, and to consider diverging from the well-worn path — to pursue their dreams. The North Star is sure to have a profound effect on its many readers.

Can't wait to read this one!

“Chick lit with grit.”
- Ladies Home Journal

“Sarah Pekkanen’s latest celebrates the healing power of female friendship for three very different young women sharing a New York City apartment. At turns bittersweet, laugh-out-loud funny, and painfully real, you’ll wish you could move in with these girls.”
—Jodi Picoult, New York Times bestselling author

In her third novel, internationally bestselling author Sarah Pekkanen examines the lives of three women working and living together in New York City and shows that family secrets may shape us all, but it’s the rich, complicated layers of friendship that can save us.Cate, Renee, and Abby have come to New York for very different reasons, and in a bustling city of millions, they are linked together through circumstance and chance.

Cate has just been named the features editor of Gloss, a high-end lifestyle magazine. It’s a professional coup, but her new job comes with more complications than Cate ever anticipated.
Cate’s roommate Renee will do anything to nab the plum job of beauty editor at Gloss.

Pekkanen’s most compelling, true-to-life novel yet tells the story of three very different women as they navigate the complications of careers and love—and find the lifeline they need in each other.
Library Journal review of These Girls: “Because Pekkanen’s characters are sympathetic and familiar, readers are likely to identify with aspects of each protagonist. Fans of Jennifer Weiner. Sarah Dessen, Liza Palmer, and Emily Giffin will strongly appreciate this smart novel by a rising star in women’s fiction.”

The Song Remains The Same

One of my favourtie authors has a new book out and I thought I'd spread the word.  If you want an insightful, well thought out novel that goes far beyond the chick lit genre then pick up your copy today!  Below is a note from the author herself...

Dear friends,
It has been almost two years since my last book release, and so it is with much joy (and a sliver of relief) that I can announce the publication of THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME, which hits bookstores April 12th!
Publishers Weekly says,"Bestseller Winn Scotch sparkles in her captivating fourth novel. Readers will love Nell and won't be able to put the book down until they know how much of her past she wants to bring into her future."

And Booklist calls it, "modern, lively, breezy, introspective, and three-dimensional."

If you don't want to take their word for it, why not listen to Glamour magazine? The book will be their must-read selection for June.

I would be beyond appreciative if you could swing by your local bookstore or hopped on over to Amazon to grab a copy this week. Writers are never much without their readers, and as always, I'm indebted to all of you for your kindness and enthusiasm. I'd be so grateful if you'd continue to spread the word about the release to any other readers out there!
Wishing you and yours lots of love, and thanks so much once again!

How to be a Domestic Goddess ~ my life's ambition!

How to be a Domestic Goddess: Baking and the Art of Comfort Cooking

by Nigella Lawson

This book is not about being a goddess, but about feeling like one. And tell me, who doesn't want to feel like a goddess?!  What this deliciously reassuring and mouthwatering cookbook demonstrates is that it's not hard to bake a tray of muffins or a sponge layer cake -- but the rewards they bring are disproportionately high (just ask my family!).

Here is the book that feeds our fantasies, understands our anxieties and puts cakes, pies and pastries right back into our kitchens and our lives. There's everything from cupcakes to chocolate cakes; from brownies to bagels; from gooseberry-cream crumble to double apple pie; from pizza to pistachio macaroons; scones and muffins; cheesecakes and steamed syrup sponge; from baklava to a Barbie cake; as well as children's cooking, Christmas baking and other wonderful family festive treats -- all illustrated with ravishing photographs throughout.  Get out your bowl and whisk, this book will inspire you to bake something wonderful!
